Deutz Ag engines in Eima 2024: diversification objective

Deutz Ag in Eima 2024

Deutz AG‘s presence at EIMA reaffirmed the German manufacturer’s diversification trends in response to current market challenges. The company is expanding its range of electrified solutions alongside its diesel engines and concrete hydrogen-powered offerings.

At Eima, Deutz AG primarily aimed to strengthen its business in the traditional internal combustion engine segment while realigning its “green” portfolio to meet market demands for electrification and alternative fuels. This strategy, emphasized by Deutz CEO Sebastian Schulte in recent months, was reinforced at Eima with a commercial approach to electrification that shifted from providing complete propulsion systems to supplying component groups or individual components, broadening a business segment that currently delivers modest economic returns.

It’s no coincidence that Deutz recently proposed selling Torqueedo to Yamaha while acquiring Blue Star Power Systems, a U.S.-based company specializing in generator production, to enhance and expand its offerings in the power generation sector. These strategies also aim to reduce costs to address current market difficulties, targeting $50 million in savings by the end of 2026 through greater production flexibility and workforce reductions.

Service intervals every thousand hours

At the Eima booth, internal combustion engines remained the cornerstone of Deutz’s presence. Featured engines included the “TCD 2.9 HT” series, a four-cylinder, 2.9-liter engine with a power output of 55 kW (75 hp) at 2,600 rpm and a torque of 375 Nm at 1,400 rpm. This turbocharged version is available with stop-and-start systems and optional service intervals every 1,000 hours. These engines are Stage V certified thanks to after-treatment systems with DOC and Dpf filters, excluding Egr.

Similar characteristics are shared by the “HP” version, offering 82 kW (111 hp) at 2,600 rpm and 420 Nm of maximum torque, equipped with an SCR filter in its after-treatment system. The booth also showcased the new “TCD 5.2” unit, a turbocharged 5.2-liter, four-cylinder engine with a wastegate valve capable of delivering up to 170 kW (230 hp) and 950 Nm of torque.

Another highlight was the “Ttcds 7.7” engine. With 7.7 liters and six cylinders, the dual-turbocharged version achieves a power output of 280 kW (375 hp). Additionally, the recently introduced “TCD 3.9/4.0” four-cylinder engine, with a 3.9-liter displacement, delivers peak performance at 176 hp and 700 Nm of torque.

Hydrogen looks to China

In terms of alternative solutions, the diesel lineup was complemented by the “TCG 7.8 Hydrogen” unit, recently introduced to the market and already operational in the power generation sector in China. This six-cylinder, 7.8-liter engine offers a maximum output of 220 kW (300 hp) and 1,000 Nm of torque.

Finally, regarding electrified systems, Deutz showcased new high-voltage batteries operating at up to 400 volts, with flexible capacities ranging from 39 to 80 kWh.
